How To Win Proportional Representation And What Are We Going To Do About It?

Hello FairVoters,

The astounding Liberal majority has opportunities for electoral reform that, although different than that of a minority government, has the potential to finally realize a fair electoral system. As citizens, our job is to keep the pressure on the new Liberal government to ensure it makes good on its electoral promise of “making 2015 the last unfair election”.

There are two exciting events coming up that will help us hold the newly elected Liberal government and our new Liberal MPs accountable to their election promise.

Next Wednesday, long time electoral reform advocate Paul Nijjar will speak on where and how PR has been won else where.

Date: Wednesday, 28 October 2015
Time: 7:00pm
Location:
St. John’s Kitchen Map 1
97 Victoria Street North
Kitchener

This is the abstract for the talk:

On October 19th, millions of Canadians voted without helping anybody get elected. There were distortions between the share of seats political parties receive and their share of the popular vote.

The Liberal Party promised to reform our first-past-the-post voting system. Are these promises realistic? How have other places transitioned from first-past-the-post to more proportional systems? What is the path from nice-sounding election promises to actually reforming the voting system?

In this talk we will explore some of the factors that lead to voting system change, and examine some case studies of places that have made the transition. Along the way we will pull some lessons from these experiences, and look at the successes and failures of Canadian electoral reform movements.

NOTE: The opinions and positions expressed reflect those of the speaker, and are not necessarily official Fair Vote Canada policy.

Then on Monday, 9 November 2015 at 7:00pm, in the Board Room of the Huether Hotel, we will brainstorm and plan ways and means to work with our regional MPs to make sure that they work for proportional representation in Ottawa. Who knows, maybe Harold Albrecht will be more receptive to fairness now that the CPC has been returned to the opposition benches. Let’s have a beer and plan our local role in making proportional representation a reality in Canada.

Election Signs in Support of Proportional Representation

Hello FairVoting Friends,

We have 25 large election signs in support of Proportional Representation that we want to put up around the region. The signs are suitable for busy streets and we will need help to put them up in the next week. If you know of a good location and can put up a sign, please let me know and we will get the sign to you!

Hope to see people out to these great events and PR signs every where around the region!

We can look forward to a change of our electoral system, if we support candidates who support PR on October 19th.

Kind regards,
Sharon
