Fair Vote Waterloo in the Media

EnvelopesThings are heating up for Electoral Reform in the media. January is barely half over, and already we’re counting more media mentions than we had in all of 2015! (Note: I discovered some other articles from 2015 after publishing this post, so that’s not quite true any more)

The Liberal party promised that this past federal election would be the last to be held under First-Past-The-Post. We’re going to hold them to that, so be sure to visit your Members of Parliament to tell them your views. Also, keep writing those letters to the editor!

Visit with Marwan Tabbara, MP for Kitchener South–Hespeler

Hello FairVoting Friends,

On Friday, 15 January 2016, FVC-WR visited Marwan Tabbara, MP for Kitchener-South Hespeler. We had an excellent discussion about the strengths of proportional representation and the issues with Alternative Vote (similar to FPTP but with ranked ballots). Marwan listened respectfully and asked intelligent questions. We greatly appreciated his openness to proportional representation and his willingness to research all electoral systems to determine the best electoral system for Canada. The overwhelming evidence is in support of proportional representation, so if the decision on what to replace FPTP is made based on evidence then 2019 will be our first fair election in 152 years!

It was also clear to us in our conversation with both Raj and Marwan that MPs need to hear from their constituents about which issues are important to them. A quick email, phone call or better yet a visit from constituents can make all the difference in letting our MPs know that proportional representation is key to fair elections and a parliament that works for all Canadians.

Meeting with MP Raj Saini & Next Discussion Night, 25 Jan 2016

Hello Fair Voting Friends,

On Wednesday, 13 January 2016, FVC-WR met with Raj Saini, MP for Kitchener-Centre. We talked for an hour about the principles and characteristics of an electoral system for Canada. Raj is interested in system that is clear for Canadians to understand & use and results in a government that is effective and stable. Raj will also work on getting the All Party Committee to come to Waterloo Region to hear from us on electoral reform. We appreciated Raj’s willingness to exchange ideas & his open minded approach for all electoral options. Thank you Raj!

The last Monday of every month is our monthly discussion night. Our next discussion evening is Monday, 25 January 2016 at 7pm at the Egg Roll King Restaurant, 85 Courtland Ave. E. in Kitchener. Please join us for information and an engaging discussion on electoral reform.

Hope to see you on the 25th for excellent Chinese food and a great discussion on electoral reform.

All the best for 2016,
Sharon Sommerville
for FVC-WR
